Day 3: YpresToday was a big bus day - we met our driver John, a jovial Dutch man, as well as our excellent local guide Raul. Raul joined us on the bus as we covered the Ypres area and its many sights. It was moving to see the many memorials and learn about the events that led to the excitement for war and the awakening to the realities of war. Raul's description of the events and movements of the front during WWI and sharing stories of his how the war personally impacted his family gave great insight into the effects of The Great War. It was a somber day, but extremely worthwhile. After a full day, we were happy to arrive in Bruges and stroll to a group dinner.

Today's ActivityWe were hopping on and off the bus today as we explored the area around Ypres. There was so much on the agenda there wasn't much opportunity for many long walks. So it was lovely to stroll through Bruges at the end of the day and enjoy the town and sunset after our dinner together. Today's stair climbing peak was during bus loading - our room was on the 2nd floor and I made a few trips to check that we had packed up everything.
Totals for the day: 13,086 steps, 15 flights of stairs |
If I could do this day differently...
I would have asked if we could stop at the Menin Gate for a longer period of time. It would have been lovely to spend some time at that memorial.
